Boost your career by studying abroad! International students often develop a global network with other students and researchers, and benefit from a variety of unique experiences. Studying abroad is an investment, but scholarships open to international students can ease your financial burden. Curious about studying abroad in Canada? In this blog, we’ll explore current scholarships for international students in Northern Canada. These scholarships may be used at universities and colleges in the territories of Nunavut, Northwest Territories, and Yukon.
Set Yourself up for Success
The scholarships below are open to multiple schools throughout Northern Canada. As you look at scholarships, make a list of due dates for the ones you want to apply to. This strategy can help you stay organized, reduce stress, and prevent missing deadlines.
Don’t Forget: It’s a good idea to start scholarship applications well before the deadline, especially ones that require supporting documents like letters of reference or personal essays. Try giving yourself at least a month to prepare if you need to ask someone for a letter of reference.
It takes time to adjust to Northern Canadian winters! Here’s how to make your first winter in Canada more fun.

- Scholarship Amount: C$2,000
- Level of Study: Undergraduate
The Northwest Territories and Nunavut Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (NAPEG) Education Foundation awards two scholarships yearly: the Mel Brown Memorial Scholarship and the Bob Spence Memorial Scholarship. Both scholarships aim to encourage NWT and Nunavut residents to study engineering and geoscience. The scholarship team looks at students’ academics, demonstrated citizenship, and leadership capability.
Per the NAPEG scholarship terms of reference: “A NWT/NU student is defined as a person whose principal residence has been located within the Northwest Territories or Nunavut for a minimum period of twelve (12) months immediately preceding the award of any scholarship, bursary, grant, or financial assistance.” So, while this scholarship is not open to international students in their first year, students in their second year or further along in their program may apply.
