Studying abroad can be an expensive journey. However, international students looking to study in the United States can take advantage of scholarships to help minimize their financial costs. Today, we’ll explore some excellent scholarships at four of ApplyBoard’s partner schools in the US.

Troy University
Troy University’s International Education Scholarship is awarded to new undergraduate students who:
- Demonstrate a high level of academic achievement
- Will be enrolled in full-time courses for a minimum of 12 hours per semester
This scholarship varies in amount, and is offered for one year (two semesters). Recipients of this scholarship will automatically have their out-of-state tuition requirements waived. However, these students must still pay at minimum the full rate of in-state tuition, unless they’re awarded an additional Service, Civic, Athletics, or Fine Arts Scholarship.
Troy University also offers the International Honors Scholarship. This scholarship varies in amount and is awarded to international undergraduate students who have excelled academically in their first two semesters. To maintain eligibility, students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) until graduation. Please note that students won’t be notified that they’ve received this scholarship until after the add/drop date in August and/or January.
International students may be eligible for other scholarships, including the:
- Robert E. and Irene Thagard Lindsay Memorial International Programs Current Scholarship
- International Recruiting Scholarship

University of Central Arkansas
The University of Central Arkansas offers the International Student Merit Scholarship through the Center for Global Learning and Engagement (CGLE). This scholarship awards US$2,000 per semester for a maximum award of US$16,000 to high-achieving international students. It’s awarded until the completion of a student’s bachelor’s degree or for up to eight consecutive semesters, whichever comes first. To be considered, you must be a first-time degree-seeking student beginning an undergraduate program. The International Student Merit Scholarship is awarded based on a variety of criteria, including a student’s:
- GPA or SAT/ACT scores
- Essay
- Resume
- Letter of recommendation
International students currently enrolled at the University of Central Arkansas may be eligible for the Global Citizen Scholarship. This highly competitive scholarship is awarded to students based on their:
- Essay submission
- GPA
- Letters of recommendation
- Leadership and/or service experience at the university

The University of Central Arkansas also recently announced their application process for Foundation and Alumni Scholarships. International students may be eligible for these scholarships, which range in amount.

Southwest Minnesota State University
Every year, Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) offers many scholarships to its international students. The International Student Success Scholarship is awarded to full-time students with a minimum of a 2.5 GPA and who are at least in their second year of studies (sophomore standing or higher). Students must apply for this scholarship through the SMSU Financial Aid Office.
If you’re a non-degree-seeking or visiting international student enrolled at Southwest Minnesota State University, you may be eligible to apply for the International Exchange Student Scholarship. This scholarship is based on academic performance and a recommendation from the student’s university or college. Students must apply for this scholarship through the International Student Success Office.

University of North Alabama
The University of North Alabama’s International Scholarship for Undergraduate Retention is awarded in a student’s third semester. This scholarship awards up to US$5,000 per semester based on the student’s GPA. It’s available to any student who previously received a recruitment scholarship, and is renewable for the span of the degree program.
The Global Partner Undergraduate Recruitment Scholarship awards US$8,000–US$10,000 for the first two semesters of an international student’s studies. All applicants are eligible upon admission.
International students studying at the graduate level may be eligible for the Global Partner Graduate Recruitment Scholarship. It awards US$5,000–US$7,000 for the first year of studies. Students must meet academic performance requirements for the second semester award.
Students may also be eligible for the Global Learning Community Housing Scholarship, International Scholarship for Graduate Retention, and Online Students Scholarship.
