What Is a Blocked Account, and Why Do I Need It?

A “blocked account” is a special German bank account which is REQUIRED for international students and other visa applicants entering Germany.

Just like proof of funds requirements in other countries, this account shows the German government you have enough money set aside for your living expenses. The funds are “blocked” in the account, then released in parts on a monthly basis after you arrive in Germany.

What about Insurance? Do I Need That Too?

Yes! Health insurance coverage is also needed to get a German student visa.

Germany has a great healthcare system, and having health insurance is mandatory for all students, including international students.

How to Get Started in 4 Easy Steps

STEP 1

Complete and Submit your Application

STEP 2

Transfer the funds

You’ll need to deposit the required amount of money into your Blocked Account. Typically, you’ll need to make the deposit via international bank transfer.
  • Required Deposit: €11,904 (or €992 per month) for a year of living expenses.
  • Depositing Process: The account should only allow withdrawals of the monthly allowance (approximately €992 per month).
  • The remaining funds will remain locked in the account until you withdraw the set monthly amount.

STEP 3

Get confirmation

After depositing the funds, you will receive a confirmation letter or statement from Expatrio, confirming the creation of your Blocked Account and the deposit of funds. This confirmation is a crucial document for your student visa application, as it serves as proof that you have sufficient financial resources for the duration of your stay.

Key Documents to Expect:
  • Bank account confirmation letter (including account details and amount deposited).
  • Proof of the amount blocked (sometimes in the form of a digital statement).
  • Deposit receipt (if applicable).

STEP 4

Get confirmation

When applying for a German student visa, you will need to submit the Blocked Account confirmation as part of your application package. Be sure to include:
  • The Blocked Account confirmation.
  • Any other required documents, such as proof of admission to a German university, your passport, academic records, and health insurance coverage
