Abbotsford School District 34 (ASD34) - W.J. Mouat Secondary School

During its thirty year history, W.J. Mouat Secondary has grown from a brand new junior high with a population of 150 students and nine teachers, to one of Canada's top high schools boasting over 1500 students with well over 80 teachers.

Built in 1973 and named after the then superintendent W. J. "Bill" Mouat, the school opened to a small group of eager grade eight and nine students. Since then, Mouat has transitioned to a secondary school with grades 8 through 12 and then, in the early 2000's to a 9-12 secondary.

Mouat has been recognized provincially and throughout Canada for its Academic, Athletic, Fine Arts, Technology Education and Community Service achievements.

With an expansion in 1988 that created science labs, art rooms and a theatre, and another expansion in 2002 that created an art wing, a practice gym and state of the art weight room, Mouat's students have the best facilities to enrich their learning, spark their creativity and build their athletic prowess. A seismic upgrade project from 2007-2010 provided both infrastructure and surface improvements.

In June of 2010, staff and students began pursuing a Character Education initiative, one that would formalize what Mouat has believed in for years: that good character and citizenship are equally important to strong academics. 

Today, Mouat is the largest high school in Abbotsford and boasts some of the finest programs available to students across Canada, including:

• Honours programs in business, accounting, marketing, economics, psychology, law, 2D and 3D design and drafting, 3D animation, IT, programming, outdoor education, fashion design, band, choir, visual arts, digital arts, French and German.
• A variety of sports teams including girl's volleyball, X-country, swimming, wrestling, basketball, golf, track and field and soccer as well as boy's football, X-country, swimming, wrestling, basketball, golf, hockey, track and field and rugby.
• Clubs and extracurriculars for all students such as multicultural club, chess club, dance squad, Right Fight club, Youth Buddy club, Hawkzine school newspaper, improv team, school dances, scholarship club, Benevolent Nerds Society (peer tutors), grad council, ski club and golf club, among many more!
