About Alberta University of the Arts

Founded in 1926, the Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) has become a significant contributor to visual culture in Canada and around the world. The college was known for its world-class facilities, award-winning faculty, and the talent and professionalism of its graduates. Originally called the Alberta College of Art (ACA), the college was initially part of what is now the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). While the two campuses still border each other, ACA officially separated from SAIT in 1985 to become an autonomous, free-standing, publicly funded art and design college.

Why Alberta University of the Arts

  • Location: Close to stunning mountain parks and full of arts and culture, Calgary is a safe, sunny city with a small-town heart. Plus, as Calgary’s economy becomes increasingly diverse, the potential for finding meaningful employment and a market for work is high – for both students and graduates.
  • Amazing arts facilities and studio space: Students will enjoy one of the best – and biggest – arts facilities Canada has to offer, with each of AUArts' shared studios supervised by skilled professionals. So students get a helping hand when they need it, as well as their own studio space in their third and fourth year.
  • Acclaimed, practicing artists as faculty: AUArts’ classes are led by some of the most talented – and prominent – practising artists in the country, with some of the smallest class sizes (i.e., a student-to-faculty ratio of 16:1). These exceptional practitioners and dedicated teachers make studying at AUArts a rich, inspiring, and personal experience for emerging artists and designers.
  • Diverse degree programs: AUArts offers Bachelors of Fine Arts and Design degree programs, as well as a Masters of Fine Arts. With 11 areas of concentration and the flexibility to work across disciplines, students can expand their skills or hone right in on the details that inspire them.
