About Albion College

Since its founding in 1835, Albion College has grown and expanded its vision of a liberal arts education grounded in purpose, passion and academic excellence. Albion College is nationally recognized for its academic excellence in the liberal arts tradition, a learning-centered commitment, and a future-oriented perspective.

Albion College is committed to liberal education in the arts and sciences. It is the College's belief that such an education empowers individuals to live lives of constructive purpose and accomplishment, enriched by the confidence and pleasure that comes from thinking logically, imaginatively and humanely. In light of this vision, Albion College seeks to create and maintain, in a residential setting, a supportive, intellectually stimulating community which exhibits and prizes curiosity, creativity, dissent and diversity.

Teaching and learning are central to the mission of Albion College. This means that while the faculty are productive in scholarly and creative endeavors, their primary commitment is to teaching–specifically, to fostering the intellectual engagement and growth of students. The primary responsibility of students at Albion College is to develop mastery in the methods by which knowledge is acquired, critically evaluated, and appropriately applied. The college believes such an emphasis prepares students for a lifetime of learning and a multiplicity of possible careers by developing their broad reasoning, writing and speaking abilities. While the classroom is at the heart of the school’s educational mission, Albion College believes that the entire College community should share in the learning experiences found in the school’s residential setting and through involvement in out-of-classroom opportunities and experiences, including those in the City of Albion.

Why Albion College:
  • Campus: With almost 600 acres to explore, there’s something for everyone. For example, the Whitehouse Nature Center is 140 acres’ worth of outdoor education, and it comes complete with a visitors’ center that houses a classroom, wildlife observation room, and live exhibits of local reptiles and amphibians. Or the Dow Recreation and Wellness Center, which brings together 18,000 square feet of educational, and recreational facilities. It includes the Ungrodt Tennis Center, the Dean Aquatic Center and the newly expanded fitness and student activity Serra Fitness Center.
  • Location: The campus is located in the city of Albion, Michigan. It’s small, it’s close, and it has a lot to offer. To start with, it’s charming—the handsome Victorian homes, redbrick main street, lovely Georgian buildings on the Albion College quadrangle. The scenic Kalamazoo River runs along the southern border of Albion’s campus, and canoeing is a big part of the Albion experience. Downtown has seen a tremendous post-industrial revitalization. The Bohm Theatre, The Food Hub, Stirling Books and Brew, plus many more attractions has Albion feeling like the classic American college town. Citizens, students, and visitors alike will be right at home. At the same time, all will be inspired by the vibrant initiatives by both city and college alike.
  • Student Activities: An Albion education involves more than time in the classroom and library. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the wide range of opportunities available to them, including approximately 100 clubs and organizations, student government, publications, Greek organizations and athletics. The Office of Campus Programs and Organizations (CPO), located in the Kellogg Center, serves as a resource center for students, faculty and student groups.
  • Intercultural Affairs: In support of Albion’s commitment to an inclusive, pluralistic and equitable community for learning, the Office of Intercultural Affairs works cooperatively with students, faculty, staff and the Albion community to heighten awareness of an appreciation for cultural, ethnic and racial diversity. Emphasis is placed on the development and implementation of educational programs and activities that assist in the transition and retention of under-represented students. These programs include an orientation and mentoring program.
