About Berkeley City College (BCC)

Berkeley City College, formerly Vista Community College, was founded in 1974. Berkeley City College is part of the broader Peralta Community College District group which includes College of Alameda, Laney College and Merritt College. In 2006, Berkeley City College moved to a newly constructed six-story, 165,000 square foot urban campus only one-and-one-half blocks from the University of California at Berkeley.

Today, Berkeley City College offers programs in American Sign Language, biotechnology, business, computer information systems, English language and literature, global studies, the liberal arts, multimedia arts, public and human services, and social sciences. This suite of programming places Berkeley City College on the leading edge of community college education in California.

Berkeley City College students form part of a thriving college community which mirrors the San Francisco Bay Area’s ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic diversity. They include single parents, full-time workers, re-entry women, career changers and high school students. Working together with Berkeley City College faculty, students create a dynamic environment where interdisciplinary education and teamwork prepare students for many career options.

Berkeley City College is located in downtown Berkeley. Berkeley is a city of around 125,000 people on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay in northern Alameda County, California, and is generally considered one of the most socially progressive cities in the United States of America. Berkeley has a seasonally variable climate, with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters, all influenced by the region's close proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Berkeley also has many parks, and promotes greenery and the environment. With respect to culture and entertainment, Berkeley offers numerous festivals throughout the year, including the Berkeley Kite Festival, Berkeley Juggling and Unicycling Festival and the Bay Area Book Festival. Berkeley is also well connected to the larger urban centres of Oakland and San Francisco in the Bay Area.
