About Calgary Board of Education (CBE) - Central Memorial High School

Central Memorial High School is a dynamic and diverse learning community that serves approximately 1100 students. Its students come from our surrounding communities, as well as all other areas of the city. Unique program offerings make Central Memorial High School the high school of choice for the 21st Century Learner.

Central is home to The Centre for The Performing and Visual Arts, the only fine arts program in Calgary Board of Education allowing students the opportunity to engage in their chosen artistic discipline every day for 90 minutes for three full years. Students in this program may want to pursue art as a career, or may simply want to focus more of their high school credits around their chosen artistic discipline. Central offers flexible timetabling options for students enrolled in the National Sport Academy helping to balance and ease the pressure of academic programming with the rigor of athletic training for high-level athletes. Central’s course offerings in Career and Technology combined with The Career and Technology Centre makes Central a convenient and logical choice for students interested in exploring technology and the trades. Our CORE academic program is rigorous and challenging at all levels from Knowledge and Employability, to our unique Advanced Placement Program which offers students wishing to go beyond the outcomes of the general academic program, an opportunity to be involved in a program of enrichment. Finally, Central is home to five special education system classes. We house three TASC classes, one CSSI class, and one combo TASC/CSSI designed for fourth-year students transitioning to adult programming.

Diversity is Central's strength and it prides itself on ensuring that all members of the learning community are valued and belong. Student success is at the core of all that Central does and its culture of inclusivity is the first step in this journey. Central promotes the full “high school experience” and believes that some of the most memorable moments of high school and some of the most important lessons occur outside of the classroom walls. Central boasts a competitive athletic program and many extra and co-curricular opportunities for students to become involved in such as an active Student Leadership program, the scientifically motivated iGEM Team which competes yearly at MIT in Boston, the large and fierce GSA, and the “Best Buddies” program which pairs special needs learners with a peer mentor.

The school motto, “Pursue Your Passion” is defined as more than following one’s dream, it is a challenge to students to get involved, take action, and ownership over their life, engage in their learning, become a part of the community, and in so doing, discover their passions. At Central, the goal is to provide the conditions for this to happen for all students. Central takes its role as a partner in the learning journey of its students very seriously. Regardless of where students come from and where they hope to go, Central is committed to supporting each and every one!
