About East Tennessee State University (ETSU)
East Tennessee State University (ETSU) opened in 1911 as East Tennessee State Normal School, a teacher training institution which survives to this day as ETSU’s University School K-12 education program. The East Tennessee State Normal School took on its current name, East Tennessee State University, in 1963 after expanding its curriculum and gaining university status.
East Tennessee State University offers a broad range of academic subjects, with colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business and Technology, Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences, Education, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Public Health. It also has an Honors College and schools of Continuing Studies and Graduate Studies. East Tennessee State University offers several unique programs. The Appalachian Studies minor explores the ongoing history and culture of the Appalachian region and its Indigenous Peoples. East Tennessee State University is one of just a handful of universities to offer a graduate-level course in Storytelling. East Tennessee State University is also the proud home of the first degree in Bluegrass, Old Time and Country Music Studies, making it a favourable choice for musicians.

East Tennessee State University’s main campus is located in Johnson City, Tennessee, in the northeastern tip of the state bordered by Virginia and North Carolina. As of 2020, the population of Johnson City was 71,046, making it the eighth largest city in the state of Tennessee. Johnson City has a humid subtropical climate, with warm summers and cool winters. Temperatures in Johnson City are partially moderated by its elevation and proximity to the Appalachian Mountains. Precipitation is abundant, with an annual average of 45.22 inches. Summer is typically the wettest part of the year, while early autumn is considerably drier. Snowfall is moderate and sporadic, with an annual average of 15.6 inches. Trails through the Appalachian Mountains begin just 30 minutes away from East Tennessee State University’s main campus in Johnson City. Further afield, the Cherokee National Forest and Great Smokey Mountains National Parks offer ample opportunities for camping, hiking and climbing in beautiful natural settings.
