East Tennessee State University’s main campus is located in Johnson City, Tennessee, in the northeastern tip of the state bordered by Virginia and North Carolina. As of 2020, the population of Johnson City was 71,046, making it the eighth largest city in the state of Tennessee. Johnson City has a humid subtropical climate, with warm summers and cool winters. Temperatures in Johnson City are partially moderated by its elevation and proximity to the Appalachian Mountains. Precipitation is abundant, with an annual average of 45.22 inches. Summer is typically the wettest part of the year, while early autumn is considerably drier. Snowfall is moderate and sporadic, with an annual average of 15.6 inches. Trails through the Appalachian Mountains begin just 30 minutes away from East Tennessee State University’s main campus in Johnson City.
