About Florida Atlantic University

Florida Atlantic University (FAU), established in 1961, officially opened its doors in 1964 as the fifth public university in Florida. From its very inception, FAU was envisioned as the leading edge of an emerging breed of American universities that would quite deliberately throw off the ivy-covered trappings of the tradition-bound worlds of academia and invent new and novel ways of making higher education available to those who sought it.

FAU offers students a transformative education rooted in the belief that creativity and dedication fuel academic excellence. Expert faculty create a learning environment that prepares students for success in all areas of life. Accordingly, FAU is home to a dynamic community of innovators coming together to answer today’s most important and pressing questions. To this end, FAU offers over 170 degree programs through internal Colleges of Arts and Letters, Business, Social Work and Criminal Justice, Education, Engineering and Computer Science, Graduate, Medicine, Nursing, and Science. FAU also has an Honors College which is the USA’s only university-affiliated, free-standing honors college.

FAU is an energetic and fast-growing institution, determined to propel itself to the forefront of innovation and scholarship. In recent years, FAU has doubled its research expenditures and outpaced its peers in student achievement rates. For example, to enhance interdisciplinary and collaborative research, FAU has established four university-wide research institutes focused on the university’s strengths. The Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute is dedicated to improving and addressing diseases of the brain, while the Institute for Human Health and Disease Intervention focuses on enhancing human health and quality of life. FAU’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute revolves around studying local, regional and global environments, and the Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering is interested in using sensors to monitor the world.

Boca Raton Campus

More than 70% of FAU's 30,000 students take classes at FAU's first and largest campus, Boca Raton, and the majority of the University's 170+ degree programs are based there. Located less than three miles from the Atlantic Ocean and the beautiful beaches of Boca Raton, the campus features everything students would expect from a modern university – suite-style housing for more than 4,500 students, brand-new athletics and recreational facilities, art galleries, a cafe/movie theater complex and so much more — all in a vibrant, tropical setting with a student body that is the most diverse among Florida's public universities.

Why Florida Atlantic University?

Diversity: At Florida Atlantic University, more than half of the students identify as a minority or as an international student, making FAU the most diverse public university in Florida. FAU believes varied collections of thoughts enrich the academic experiences of students.
Undergraduate Research: Florida Atlantic University offers students a world of opportunities to dive into high-quality research, scholarship and creative experiences from the moment they step onto campus. FAU students participate in more than 6,000 undergraduate research experiences each year.
Health and Wellness: Florida Atlantic University offers a wide range of resources including award-winning peer education and health promotion programs. In addition to its facilities and classes, Campus Recreation hosts intramural and club sports, as well as an outdoor adventures program that takes students on excursions throughout the country.
Location: Set in tropical South Florida, Florida Atlantic University is situated within an entrepreneurial hub with a booming tech industry and job market offering students numerous opportunities to learn through experience.
Experiential Learning: Florida Atlantic University offers over 4,800 internship placements to support graduate employability at global companies including Google, Apple, General Motors and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
