About Lees-McRae College

Lees-McRae College has one mission: to educate and inspire students to approach life and work from a creative, collaborative, and critical perspective in preparation for diverse careers and environments. Through common ambition, Lees-McRae College maintains their focus on the needs of all learners - some are athletes, some are in the honors program, and some are working while returning to school. Regardless of where a student is and where they want to go, Lees-McRae College's expert faculty and committed staff will help them get there.

Lees-McRae College continues the vision of one of its' first founders Rev. Tufts, inspiring students of the Southern Appalachian region and beyond. Lees-McRae College extends educational opportunities and service to diverse populations and continues to fulfill its' motto—In the Mountains, Of the Mountains, For the Mountains.

Why Lees-McRae College
  • Campus Life: There are endless ways to customize the student experience and create memories that will last a lifetime. Students can take workshops to help them explore leadership roles, take trips to the surrounding mountains, participate in social events including Movie and Craft Nights, become a part of Greek Council, Student Government Association, Religious Life, or join even more varying clubs and organizations.
  • Facilities: Situated in the mountains, Lees-McRae emphasizes experiential education, with many student learning laboratories in surrounding natural environments. Due to the size of the campus, there are plenty of facilities to take advantage of - upwards of 50 different buildings and areas to foster creativity and explore new ways to learn.
  • Culture: Lees-McRae College's residential campus in the mountains offers a home for both intellectual and personal growth. Rich traditions encourage social responsibility and reminds everyone to embrace the environment. An array of groups and activities connects student to student, faculty, and staff and may even lead to enduring friendships. From adventuring in the natural beauty with others, to using their voice in student government, to playing intramural sports against a roommate—Lees-McRae College celebrates coming together in all forms.
  • Location: The town of Banner Elk hosts concerts, markets, and community events throughout the year and the famous Woolly Worm Festival! Just miles from campus, take a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway and visit nearby towns such as Boone, Blowing Rock, and Linville. Segments of the Appalachian Trail and Mountains-to-Sea Trail wind through Avery County for hiking options. If students are looking to climb even higher, they can visit one of the local peaks including Grandfather Mountain, Sugar Mountain, or Beech Mountain, plus the skiing and snowboarding options at the local peaks in the winter months.
