About Maple Leaf World School - Kwantlen Polytechnic University

The Maple Leaf university school model offers the best of both worlds—a university preparatory high school located on a university campus. Students experience the support and community of small high school classes and unique high school identity, along with the independence and academic opportunities of learning at world-class post-secondary facilities.


Maple Leaf World School – KPU (MLWS-KPU) is located on the Richmond campus of Kwantlen Polytechnic University. The school’s learning environment offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in English and in a Canadian educational environment. Students complete the BC graduation program curriculum preparing them for further studies at KPU and in universities around the world.


At MLWS-KPU, all teachers are BC certified and have experience teaching in international school settings. Students complete the BC graduation program curriculum preparing them for universities around the world. While focusing on academic achievement and studies in English, our students also have the option to enroll in Mandarin Language and Chinese Social Studies courses. The University Advance Start Program allows academically gifted individuals to take one university course each semester, which provides them with an academic advantage in their post-secondary studies.

Established in 1981, KPU offers degrees, diplomas, and certificates in more than 120 programs. The Richmond campus is located in the heart of a vibrant and very ethnically diverse community on a 10-acre urban site. The campus features modern classrooms, state-of-the-art graphic design computer labs, interior design work studios, and fully equipped science labs. The campus also includes a cafeteria, student lounge areas, indoor and outdoor courtyard spaces, a library, and a learning centre.
  • Facilities: Through its partnership with Kwantlen Polytechnic University, the school provides an optimal environment for learning and teaching. MLWS-KPU facilities share cafeteria, library, and science lab space with the university to offer a globally recognized curriculum that inspires students to outperform. The school’s learning environment includes small classes and welcoming recreational spaces. Students receive access to an Olympic designed sports facility that can be used both during and outside of school hours.  The school enjoys a quiet location within the university where students are safe and supervised.
  • Clubs & School Activities: Involvement in extracurriculars helps stimulate students in their studies, makes them more motivated to learn, and can make school more enjoyable and fulfilling. Extracurricular activities can also provide students with a much-needed break from the stresses of academics while helping them to develop skills and allowing them to take part in valuable social situations. Students are encouraged to participate in school clubs as well as extracurricular PE activities. The MLWS-KPU offers as follows: Calligraphy Club, Crochet Club, Food Bank Club, Oval Club, Sculpture Club, and Soccer Club.
  • Unique School Events & Field Trips: MLWS-KPU is committed to providing a wide range of sports, fitness, and recreational opportunities that promote healthy, active lifestyles, and leadership development. It's Monday to Thursday after-school club program allows students to explore their hobbies and develop important life skills in supervised environments. The school’s weekend activity program organizes 16 outings each year and is designed to showcase the amazing adventures Vancouver has to offer. These optional activities are free for students to join and include activities such as skiing, hiking, go-karting, live sporting events, and magic shows. The learning, relationships, and activities that take place outside of the classroom are key parts of the overall Maple Leaf World School experience.   
  • Homestay: MLWS-KPU has partnered with First Choice International Placements, a company with over 20 years of experience providing international students with safe and supported homestay accommodations. Students live in a caring, family environment, developing relationships outside of the classroom. All homestay families are English speaking with homes located within 30 minutes of the school. Two students are paired with one homestay family with each student having their own separate furnished room.  Breakfast and dinner are provided by the family with hot lunches provided by the school.
  • Dual Admissions: In order to provide the smoothest and fastest transition to university, dual admission (high school and university) is available to Grade 11 and 12 applicants. Through the dual admission process, students receive a full offer to a Maple Leaf World School as well as a simultaneous conditional offer to Kwantlen Polytechnic University, thus providing added assurance to our students and their families.

The school is located in the heart of a diverse Vancouver-based suburb and is often ranked as one of the best locations in the world in which to live and study.
