Merritt’s striking vistas provide a breathtaking backdrop for a packed roster of first-rate academic and vocational programs with a panorama that includes the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific ocean. Just minutes from the Oakland and East Bay’s busiest commercial centers, Merritt boasts acclaimed programs in Community Social Services, Registered Nursing, Child Development, Nutrition and Dietetics, Environmental Studies, and Landscape Horticulture. Merritt’s 7,000 students benefit from a diverse, sophisticated, and startlingly beautiful campus and learning environments, which look out over Oakland and the broader San Francisco Bay Area.

Oakland is the largest city and the county seat of Alameda County, California. A major West Coast port, Oakland is the largest city in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. Oakland  experiences warm, dry summers, and cool, wet winters. In terms of culture and entertainment, Oakland has a vibrant art scene and claims the highest concentration of artists per capita in the United States of America. Oakland has been designated as one of America's top twelve art communities, recognizing Downtown (including Uptown), Chinatown, Old Oakland, and Jack London Square as communities that have most successfully combined art, artists and venues for creativity and expression with independent businesses, retail shops and restaurants, and a walkable lifestyle to make vibrant neighborhoods. Oakland also has many parks and recreation centers which total 5,937 acres (2,403 ha). Some of the more notable parks and natural areas include Bushrood Park, Joseph Knowland State Arboretum and Park (home of the Oakland Zoo), Lake Merritt, Morcom Rose Garden, Mosswood Park, and Allendale Park.
