About Midwestern State University (MSU Texas)

Since its founding in 1922, Midwestern State University (MSU Texas) has grown from a local junior college to a member of the Texas Tech University System (TTU System) serving a wide and varied public.

Created in 1922 as Wichita Falls Junior College, the second municipal junior college in Texas, its earliest home was in Wichita Falls High School with which it shared both the building and faculty. The post-World War II years brought change in the school’s mission and in its name. On September 1, 1961, MSU Texas became a part of the Texas Colleges and Universities System, and the junior college division was dissolved. In 1975, the Texas Legislature changed the name to Midwestern State University (MSU Texas).

MSU Texas became the fifth member institution of the TTU System in September 2021, a testament to the growth and exceptional reputation of the university throughout the state. In 2022, MSU Texas commemorates 100 years since its inception. With the theme "Spirit Always Bold," the centennial year honors the rich history of the university, celebrates its vibrant present and envisions an exciting future for MSU Texas.

Today, MSU Texas is a leading public liberal arts university committed to providing students with rigorous undergraduate and graduate education in the liberal arts and various professions. MSU Texas is the only university in Texas to become a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC). The Council champions the cause of liberal arts education of superior quality in the public sector.

Through an emphasis upon teaching, augmented by the opportunity for students to engage in research and creative activities alongside faculty and to participate in co-curricular and service programs, MSU Texas prepares its graduates to embark upon their careers or pursue advanced study. MSU Texas' undergraduate education is based upon a comprehensive arts and sciences core curriculum. The understanding that students gain of themselves, others, and the social and natural world prepares them to contribute constructively to society through their work and through their private lives. Accordingly, MSU Texas is acclaimed throughout the state for its medical, teaching, business, and liberal arts programs.

MSU Texas is located in Wichita Falls, Texas, which is located midway between Oklahoma City and the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. MSU Texas' 255-acre campus is nestled among the city's residential area, and comprises 70 buildings, numerous playing fields, and an outdoor recreational facility near Sikes Lake.

The City of Wichita Falls, Texas is comfortably nestled in the North-East corner of the Panhandle/Plains area of North Texas. By most accounts, Wichita Falls can be summed up with two words, pleasant and comfortable. This is a family-oriented city conveniently located within two hours of two metropolitan areas with populations exceeding one million citizens: Dallas-Fort Worth and Oklahoma City. Wichita Falls has a population of approximately 104,553 and is the county seat of Wichita County.
