About Muhlenberg College
Muhlenberg College is an independent liberal arts institution located in Allentown, Pennsylvania, about fifty-five miles north of Philadelphia. With an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 2,000 students, Muhlenberg is dedicated to shaping creative, compassionate, collaborative citizens through rigorous academic programs in the arts, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences, as well as select preprofessional programs. Founded in 1848 as Allentown Seminary, the institution was renamed Muhlenberg College in 1867 and began providing a liberal arts education committed to the highest standards of academic integrity and excellence.
Muhlenberg is unique among private colleges in offering programs in professional areas such as business, education, public health, media & communication and neuroscience in addition to the traditional liberal arts majors. The Muhlenberg curriculum provides opportunities for students in all programs to participate in research, community engagement, internships and study abroad options that provide critical experiences for students in today’s rapidly changing world. The outstanding quality of the Muhlenberg academic program has been recognized by Phi Beta Kappa and some 15 additional national honorary societies with established chapters at the College.
The College is committed to providing students with powerful outcomes. The Career Center and The Muhlenberg Network of alumni and parents help students and graduates benefit from their rewarding learning experience through internship and job placement programs. Muhlenberg graduates are prepared to meet their personal definitions of success while continuing to value service to others in ways both big and small.
Why Muhlenberg College
- Location: The College is located in Allentown, Pennsylvania, the state’s third largest and fastest growing city. The campus is situated in the residential “west end” neighborhood, approximately 55 miles north of Philadelphia and 90 miles west of New York City. The College benefits by being situated next to Allentown’s famous park system.
- Campus: Muhlenberg College’s 82-acre main campus contains residential, athletic, study, social, performance, and laboratory spaces, including significant architectural works such as Egner Memorial Chapel, Baker Center for the Arts, and Trexler Pavilion. The sculpture “Victor’s Lament”, by abstract expressionist Mark di Suvero, is displayed prominently on the front lawn of the campus. As a testament to the traditional Lutheran sign of welcome, most of campus is adorned with Muhlenberg’s famous red doors, always open to visitors and friends alike.
- Faculty: The College’s most important resource in the fulfillment of its purposes is its faculty, drawn from the major universities of the United States and several other nations. More than three-quarters of the full-time teaching faculty at Muhlenberg hold the Ph.D. degree, and research and scholarship are undertaken with special regard to their relationship to teaching and learning. Every effort is made to encourage a community of productive scholars and artists who share a passion for effective teaching.
- Experiential Learning: The Center promotes career development by encouraging students to integrate their academic and co-curricular experiences. Internships are available for students seeking experience related to their career interests. These are listed in Handshake, the Center’s online database to which all students have an account. In Handshake, employers from a wide variety of industries post internships and jobs for Muhlenberg students and alumni. The Career Center takes an active approach to helping students identify potential employers and connect with alumni. The Career Center manages an online platform called The Muhlenberg Network which has over 2,500 alumni in a variety of fields who are willing to help students in their careers.
- Diversity Within Community: The College is committed not only to nurturing a sense of oneness and community but also to developing a greater diversity among its members and has initiated special strategies to recruit students, faculty, and staff which will result in a greater diversity in the College community. The development of additions to the curriculum and student life programs as well as the presence of persons from varied ethnic and geographic backgrounds enriches and re-forms the tradition of the College.
