About New Jersey Institute of Technology

Founded in 1881 as Newark Technical School and renamed as New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1975, NJIT is one of the nation’s leading public polytechnic universities. New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) prepares students to be leaders in the technology-dependent economy of the 21st century. The university’s multidisciplinary curriculum and computing-intensive approach to education provide the technological proficiency, business know-how, and leadership skills that future CEOs and entrepreneurs will need to succeed. With an enrollment of over 11,500 undergraduate and graduate students, NJIT offers small-campus intimacy with the resources of a major public research university.

NJIT offers more than 125 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in six specialized schools instructed by expert faculty, 98 percent of whom hold the highest degree in their field. NJIT’s academic programs are fully accredited by the appropriate accrediting boards, commissions and associations such as Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA), Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).

As New Jersey’s science, technology and design university, New Jersey Institute of Technology has earned a solid reputation as one of the nation’s preeminent STEM-based educational and research institutions. The university is consistently ranked among the highest in the country in return-on-investment (ROI) for its graduates and ranks among the top U.S. polytechnic universities in terms of research expenditures. NJIT’s impact on the State of New Jersey exceeds $2.8 billion in total economic output each year, supporting more than 11,000 jobs and generating employment income of $560 million.

Why New Jersey Institute of Technology

  • Location: Newark is a diverse city filled with restaurants, shops, galleries and more than 30,000 college students. Getting Around Town Newark is a transportation hub with Newark Penn Station 10 minutes from campus, as well as Newark Liberty International Airport less than 15 minutes away. On-campus shuttle service to Newark Penn Station provides access to the airport as well as New York City, renowned for its culture, entertainment, and career opportunities. On any given day, students can watch a sporting event (NJIT has 19 Division I teams), challenge friends in the Campus Center’s gaming room or lend a hand in a community cleanup project.
  • Activities & Organizations: NJIT is home to hundreds of student-run clubs and organizations covering a wide variety of personal and professional interests. Each gives students the chance to become involved in campus life and connect with other students who have similar interests. Whether students want to save the environment, explore their creative side, run for student government, or join a fraternity or sorority, students will find many options at NJIT. There is a group for every interest–educational, multicultural, artistic, pre-professional, political, athletic, religious, service-oriented and more.
  • Community Engagement: NJIT also makes significant contributions to the community through initiatives such as its $1 billion Campus Gateway neighborhood redevelopment plan, which is helping to revitalize a 22-acre area adjacent to the university’s campus, as well as its annual Day of Service, Alternative Spring Break and numerous other community engagement service offerings that benefit the City of Newark, and the State of New Jersey as a whole. NJIT students served 268 nonprofit agencies and logged over 52,400 community service hours.
  • Focus on Students: NJIT’s commitment to its students goes far beyond increasing the number of high-achieving students. The university ensures that they have a full spectrum of the highest-quality educational, social and physical resources necessary to be successful both in and outside of the classroom. For this reason, the university continues to expand and diversify its faculty and to invest in facilities aimed at meeting the needs of their growing student population and at giving students the edge they need in today’s demanding high-tech marketplace.
