About North Island College - Comox Valley

North Island College is a comprehensive community college that focuses on student success. NIC proudly serves more than 9,000 students annually at four campuses, a learning centre and through online and in-community learning. NIC is distinguished by their commitment to student success through strong partnership agreements with universities and colleges across BC, the US and around the world. NIC has been internationally recognized for its technology-enabled distance learning and responsive in-community programs.


The Comox Valley campus on Ryan Road first opened its doors in 1992. Since that time, the campus grew as demand for programming rose. The campus is home to the Shadbolt Studios, a modern Trades Training Centre, the Stan Hagen Theatre and is located next to the Comox Valley Aquatic Centre and the Comox Valley Hospital.

  • Campus Life and Surroundings: The Comox Valley campus is located in Courtenay, on British Columbia's Vancouver Island. There are a variety of ways to access the Comox Valley campus including by vehicle or by transit. Bike shelters are available for cyclists and a network of trails through the wooded areas of campus connect to nearby residential areas.
  • Facilities: In 2019, NIC opened a new learning space at the former St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox. NIC is leasing the former Surgical Day Centre space on the first floor of the building. Other facilities on the campus include a library, science labs, cafeteria, a theatre, and more. 
  • Experienced Faculty: NIC’s highly qualified faculty include PhD holders with international credentials, who proudly support students and their studies. Class sizes give students and lecturers the opportunity to get to know one another.
  • Commitment to Education: NIC is committed to meeting the education and training needs of adults within the service region by providing high quality, affordable higher education and skills training, collaborating with partners to create pathways to learning, and empowering individuals to achieve their full potential.
