About University of Illinois - Springfield

The University of Illinois - Springfield is one of three universities in the world-class University of Illinois System. Its talented faculty are leaders in their areas of study and teach all courses at UIS.

Students take advantage of leading-edge leadership opportunities not found at other universities. This allows them to shape their college experience and positions them ahead of peers outside UIS for career opportunities and further scholarship.

Why University of Illinois - Springfield

  • Small class size: The University of Illinois - Springfield's classes are small (student-professor ratio averages 15:1) and professors know their students – not just their names but their strengths and their goals. Students will enjoy the close relationships that naturally occur with these teacher-scholars. Professors, not teaching assistants, teach classes at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Research opportunities: Both undergraduates and graduate students are not only invited but encouraged to share labs and projects with professors, and to publish and present alongside them. University of Illinois - Springfield is home to research institutes such as the Center for State Policy and Leadership and owns research facilities such as the Emiquon Field Station, where students work alongside scientists from the Nature Conservancy, documenting one of the largest wetlands restorations in the world.
  • Campus community: Living in the campus community can be one of the most rewarding experiences of college life. Every year, more than 1,100 students choose from among four distinct living options - residence halls, townhouses, apartments, and family housing. The facilities are modern and well maintained.
  • Location: People may know Springfield, Illinois as the place where Abraham Lincoln lived and worked before becoming the 16th American president. But in addition to presidential history, this vibrant capital city offers residents an incredible quality of life. Springfield has an incredibly rich arts and culture scene, complete with art galleries and collectives, theater, comedy and music.
  • Student organizations: Involvement in campus organizations is an important part of the complete educational experience at the University of Illinois - Springfield. Student organizations offer social, service, and professional opportunities for their members within the university and community. Membership can broaden acquaintances, develop leadership ability, build decision-making and problem-solving skills, and complement classroom instruction.
  • International support: The Office of International Student Services is dedicated to helping international students at the University of Illinois - Springfield. The staff is available to guide students on immigration matters (visa document questions, government paperwork, work authorization processes), to present orientation and special programs, to help with planning, promoting and presenting social events, and to provide cross-cultural counseling and academic and financial advising.
