About Whittier College

About

Whittier College is a four-year liberal arts institution that prepares students from diverse backgrounds to excel in a complex global society. Through challenging, interactive courses, taught by accomplished professors, students learn to make connections across disciplines, understand cultural perspectives, and integrate learning with practical application. Inspired by a Quaker heritage, the Whittier education equips students to be active citizens and effective communicators who embrace diversity and act with integrity.

The long academic tradition aims to foster in students an appreciation for the complexities of the modern world and workplace while never losing sight of the importance of social responsibility. The 93% of graduates from Whittier are working, continuing their education, or volunteering.

Whittier is a place where students become actively involved in the local community as they explore their role in the global community, too. A residential nature is a key component in defining Whittier, as students and professors live and learn in close proximity to one another, fostering an atmosphere where knowledge can be pursued 24/7. This is a community where individuality is valued, tolerance is cherished, and the things that make each of us unique are seen as invaluable tools in seeking greater knowledge and understanding.

Why Whittier College

  • Values: Whittier's approach to education - intimate classes, personal attention, and a focus on helping students understand connections across subjects and disciplines - produces graduates with skills that are highly valued by employers and graduate schools alike.
  • Culture: Students of color constitute about 69% of the College's student body, making Whittier one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country.
  • Location: Fun doesn’t stop where the campus ends. Just a few blocks from the College, Uptown Whittier boasts cafes and restaurants, a movie theater, clothing stores, a farmer’s market, and dozens of more shops for students to explore and enjoy.
  • Faculty: All courses at Whittier are taught by faculty, not teaching assistants. The student-faculty ratio is 12 to 1, making familiarity and mentorship possible.
