About Bachelor of Science - Applied Bioscience - Biopharma (Co-op)

Applied Bioscience combines Biology and Chemistry with real-world work experience and research opportunities in the growing biopharma and beverage industries. By choosing to study bioscience at Acadia, students will explore a rapidly growing field that merges their interests in biology and chemistry. The program emphasizes real-world learning and professional skills, incorporating business courses, industry connections, and 12 months of co-op placements.

The program has been designed to reflect Acadia’s roots in the Annapolis Valley, an area home to expanding beverage and biopharma industries, ranging from vineyards and craft breweries to diagnostics and drug development. These industries are integrated into the curriculum through the involvement of local industry professionals, allowing students to tackle research problems from the industry and create projects using current biotechnology practices.

Hands-on learning is a vital aspect of the program at Acadia. Students will:
  • Study foundational laboratory science courses with 3-hour weekly labs
  • Gain 12 months of paid workplace experience through mandatory co-op placements
  • Take field trips to nearby industry sites and local beverage producers
  • Explore opportunities for work in the field, laboratories, and with research partners
Upon graduation, students will be prepared to work in the life sciences sector in various roles, entering the job market with industry experience, practical skills, and a minor in Business Administration. The Applied Bioscience program can also serve as a foundation for careers in health science professions (such as medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy), education, and more.
