About Bachelor of Arts - Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems

Program Description

Bishop’s is one of the only universities in Canada offering a complete program concentrating on Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems (SAFS), teaching students about the lifecycle of food, from field to fork and beyond. The goal is to introduce students to the realities of today’s agricultural and food systems, whilst exploring agroecological alternatives from social, environmental and economic perspectives. Another aspect that makes the programs unique is that they all involve hands on opportunities to work on the Educational Farm. The farm is an essential component to the SAFS curriculum, serving as a laboratory for field teaching, experiential learning, and exploration.

The Bachelor of Arts with Dual Specialization in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems is a new, innovative path that combines two minors:
 • Minor in Sustainable Agriculture (24 credits)
 • Minor in Sustainable Food Systems (24 credits)

A comprehensive program that still offers students the freedom to explore different interests with 72 elective credits that could even be used to add a major of their choice. These minors may also be taken individually in conjunction with any major.

All options offer a solid basis in sustainable agriculture and food systems, equipping graduates with the knowledge needed to continue on to careers within this domain. Graduates of these programs can also leave with additional certifications such as the official Food Handler Certification and the internationally recognized Permaculture Design Certificate.

With possible career paths including agritourism operator/entrepreneur, agribusiness manager, organic farmer, permaculture designer, public policy analyst and more.
