About Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Geography (F800)
Program Description
Geography covers a variety of topics that examine the natural, social, economical and political factors that influence our rapidly changing world. This accredited BSc will help students understand ways of managing the environment sustainably and deal with social and environmental conflicts that affect the world. As the course covers both human and physical geography, students can tailor the course to their interests by choosing appropriate units from year two.
In addition to gaining a sophisticated education, students will also graduate with the practical skills needed to work in a range of industries, through multiple field trips including opportunities along the nearby Jurassic Coast, the Isle of Wight and the New Forest. What’s more, in year two there’s an opportunity to complete field experience abroad. In the past themes have included conservation practice in China, and preparation for climate change in farming communities in Nepal, but students will receive more information on this at the end of year one.
This course has been accredited by the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), as a recognition of its quality. Accredited degree programs contain a solid academic foundation in geographical knowledge and skills, and prepare graduates to address the needs of the world beyond higher education. Taught by an expert-led team of lecturers, academics and guest speakers, highlights of this diverse course include core and optional units such as Marine Geography, Earth & Society, Climate & Environmental Change, Wildlife & Ecotourism, Globalisation & Sustainable Development and Environmental Remote Sensing.
The course also develops transferable skills such as team working, research and analysis. All students complete work placements to gain valuable employment skills, contacts and real-world experience with a wide range of local and international opportunities, making contacts for the future - they must undertake two five-week placements or one of these short placements and an optional long placement of at least 30 weeks. We have dedicated Placement Coordinators to help students make the most of these opportunities and provide support while on placement.
Students in the Life and Environmental Sciences Department work in partnership with staff to co-create featured projects, collaborating with professional practitioners and also assisting with individual placement opportunities.
