About Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - English Literature with foundation year
Those who like to read, are curious about the questions that reading raises, and value the opportunity to share their discoveries with others, they will find that this course can bring benefits and rewards extending far beyond graduation.
Students will develop their ability to make critical judgements, to research, analyse and evaluate evidence. Students will strengthen their skills in the practice of thinking, writing, and arguing with clarity, cogency, and precision. These skills are highly valued by employers across a wide range of sectors and enable adaptability, creativity and resilience in the workplace.
Students will have the opportunity to study literature from a wide range of periods, genres and authors, from well-known figures to marginalised voices and texts, ripe for re-discovery.
Reflecting on their own thoughts and views, students will participate in topical discussions about how books empower people to tell their own stories, and redefine notions of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, class and other markers of identity. Students will also have the opportunity to get involved with projects, events, and talks run by International Centre for Victorian Women Writers and the Centre for Kent History and Heritage, and to work directly with archival collections at the University and Canterbury Cathedral.
Throughout the course, students will be supported by lecturers who are passionate about their specialisms and who regularly publish books and articles on what they teach. They'll share their experiences with students and support them from day one to help them develop their communication skills and foster independent critical thinking, so that students can reach their full potential.
