About Bachelor of Arts - Archaeology (F400)

Blending the sciences, social sciences, and humanities, the BA Archaeology program offers a comprehensive education that equips students with the necessary skills to study the past through material evidence. This program introduces students to the archaeology of Britain and the Mediterranean World, allowing them to delve into their areas of interest, ranging from prehistoric to post-medieval periods. By developing an understanding of specific archaeological contexts, students are able to place their research and knowledge into a contemporary context, exploring how archaeology can inform debates in today's society and how heritage sites and collections are managed.

Throughout the program, students are introduced to a variety of key archaeological skills, focusing on the study of artifacts and environmental evidence. They also have the opportunity to develop their field skills through eight weeks of placement, typically on an archaeological excavation, providing an authentic context for skill development. These placements, which take place in the summers following Year One and Year Two, can be both in the UK and overseas, offering a diverse range of experiences.

In addition to practical skills, students also have the opportunity to gain and develop special research skills through a second-year independent study module. With the guidance of expert staff, students plan and undertake an archaeological research project on a topic of their choice. As the degree progresses, students have the option to specialize further, ensuring a program tailored to their interests and providing them with valuable skills within and beyond the heritage sector.

The BA Archaeology program offers a well-rounded degree that not only develops a range of skills valued by employers but also provides a professional tone in its approach. Through fieldwork, students develop teamwork and leadership skills, while the analysis of evidence and communication of complex stories about the past to various audiences enhances their ability to engage with others effectively. This program is an excellent way to prepare for a career in archaeology or related fields, as it provides a solid foundation of knowledge and skills that are highly sought after in the professional world.
