About College Diploma - Engineering Technology - First Year to Instrumentation and Controls Engineering Technology (Transfer to Ridge Road Campus)
Program Description
Engineering Technology:
The college offers a common first year in Engineering Technology. This allows students to complete the first two semesters of the engineering technology program that they have been accepted to. After completing the first two semesters, students must enter the campus which offers the program of their choice to complete the seven week Intersession (May, June), and the subsequent years of their program.
Instrumentation and Controls Engineering Technology:
The International Society of Automation (ISA) defines instrumentation as "the art and science of measurement and control". It involves using and/or working with instruments used to measure, record, and control process variables (such as level, flow, temperature, and pressure).
As engineering technologists, graduates of this program will have the knowledge and skills that will allow them to:
- Design, install, troubleshoot and maintain process automation field and control room devices and systems such as distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), and emergency shutdown systems.
- Design and program control system interfaces, human machine interfaces (HMI) and graphical interfaces.
- Use basic engineering principles and knowledge of industrial control systems to help design the control and safety systems for an industrial process.
- Apply principles of process control to analyze the performance of industrial processes.
- Apply concepts of measurement and sensor selection to specify, install, configure, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain various process instruments commonly used in industry, including electronic transmitters, pneumatic devices, and control valves.
- Maintain, calibrate and troubleshoot various analytical instruments and analyzer sampling systems found in industrial process.
- Demonstrate an understanding of industry standards, best practices, and workplace procedures related to safety and professionalism.
- Prepare technical reports and presentations for effective communications in the workplace.
Note: Students will spend their first two semesters at Corner Brook campus before transferring to Ridge Road campus to complete the rest of their degree.
