About Bachelor of Arts - English Language (Honours)
Program Description
In this course students can deepen their knowledge of the history, forms and use of the world's first truly global language, and develop their own ability to communicate clearly, effectively and persuasively. The first year will introduce students to the study of language in general, how sounds become words, and how words are put together to create meaning; students will develop their ability to take language apart, and through their study, they will also learn how to put it together to create clear effective communication.
Students live in a world governed and connected by technology; at DMU they believe that students should study the nature of the 'wired' environment and how it influences who they are. As part of the 'Digital Humanities' strategy, students will have the opportunity to see how communication and language operate online, and how the application of digital tools and methods can deepen the knowledge of their chosen subject area.
Later years offer a module in teaching English, a final year work placement module and the opportunity to study material such as propaganda and interrogation, pragmatics (looking at the gap between what we say and what we mean), psycholinguistics and the political, social, and cultural roles of language.
The language you speak shapes the world you see; this degree helps students understand both better, and to make the connections between what they study at university and what goes on in the world beyond the classroom.
