About Master of Science - Applied Mathematics - Actuarial Science

Program Description

The tools and methods of Applied Mathematics are in demand wherever quantitative analysis is used for strategic decision-making. The MS in Applied Mathematics gives students the expertise they need to use those tools and methods in business, industry or government. It also provides a solid foundation for those interested in pursuing a PhD.

For international students: this is a STEM-designated program, which can qualify them to extend their post-graduation stay in the United States.

The Actuarial Science concentration caters to career changers as well as students who would like to further their actuarial training. It condenses a comprehensive actuarial curriculum into just two years, with an emphasis on the theory and problem-solving skills that are key to passing actuarial exams, and the computational methods that are sought after in the job market. Most of the graduates get internships and full-time jobs as actuarial analysts in insurance companies and consulting firms.

Students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the mathematical basis and foundations of probability and statistics necessary to develop and implement appropriate mathematical models.
  • Solve a computational problem by using appropriate numerical and statistical procedures with a focus on accuracy, error control, and efficiency.
  • Implement a variety of mathematical and statistical structures to model and analyze complex problems.
  • Identify, formulate, abstract, and solve mathematical problems using tools from a variety of mathematical areas including calculus, linear algebra, algebra, analysis, probability, and statistics.
  • Use computational and statistical software platforms to develop and execute various mathematical procedures and numerical algorithms.
  • Communicate mathematical ideas professionally, in verbal and visual form, by using appropriate terminology and notation.
