About Global First Year (3-Semester) - Bachelor of Science - Biomedical Engineering

The FIU Global First Year Program combines credit-bearing courses from the first year of a student’s degree with additional support services, instruction tailored to their academic and language level, and cultural experiences, helping ensure their future success. Furthermore, the Global First Year experience provides more than academic, language, and cultural growth. With the included Career Accelerator program, students can also gain valuable professional skills that prepare them for a successful career.

The Career Accelerator is designed specifically for international students:

Four semesters of professional development and career guidance

Unique workshops, real-world experiences, and cross-cultural group work

Florida International University’s Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department is one of eleven in the State University System (SUS) of Florida with a full slate (BS, MS, PhD) of programs in biomedical engineering. The department is endowed with $11 million from the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation, the Ware Foundation, and the State of Florida. One of the strengths of the growing BME department is its close relationship with FIU’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, the Brain Institute at the Miami Children’s Hospital, and the many biomedical companies in South Florida.

Bringing engineering and medicine together, Biomedical Engineering is one of the fastest-growing occupations in the U.S. for the decade ending in 2018. Biomedical engineers conduct research, design, develop, and evaluate systems and deliver products to solve health-related problems. They apply science and technology to support improved healthcare.

Graduates continue in advanced study in engineering, medicine, or the sciences or professional practice as a biomedical engineer in industry.

Students will be trained in:

Clinical application of biomedical engineering tools and product development

Manufacturing and commercialization in the biomedical industry

Participation in diverse teams

Biomedical research
