About Bachelor of Science - Environmental Health and Sustainability

Program Description

Environmental health and sustainability professionals ensure that communities and environments are safe and healthy. Biological, chemical, and physical hazards pose challenges to the planet and to people. Students can study these hazards and help prevent or reduce damage to the environment and human health.

At Illinois State, students can focus on public health, industrial hygiene, or environmental protection. This can lead to exciting careers in:
  • Food protection
  • Water and wastewater management
  • Indoor and outdoor air quality control
  • Pollution prevention
  • Occupational health
  • Industrial hygiene
When it comes to studies, students will get plenty of variety and engagement. Many of the classes involve labs and field-based learning.  Students can also take their learning out of the classroom and research alongside faculty.

Internship experience will place students in a professional setting. Intern work will mirror the work students undertake post-graduation.

ISU’s Environmental Health and Sustainability major is the only accredited program in Illinois. This means students can immediately take the following certifications after graduation:
  • State of Illinois Licensed Environmental Health Practitioner (LEHP) examination
  • National Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) examination, administered by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA)
