Portuguese is the seventh most widely spoken language in the world and is an official language of nine countries across four continents. The Department of Hispanic, Portuguese and Latin American Studies has a strong specialism in Brazilian film and visual culture.

Students will study a combination of language, art history and culture units, spending their third year abroad in a Portuguese-speaking country on a study or work placement. While abroad, students will refine their skills in a chosen language along with their cultural understanding.

Both departments encourage strong synergy between research and teaching, resulting in a vibrant learning environment for students as staff respond in their teaching to new developments. All modern languages students benefit from the use of our state-of-the-art multimedia centre.
