About 2-Term Pathway - International Year One in Computer Science - Continue to Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - Software Engineering

If someone wants to study a bachelor’s degree at a UK university but doesn’t currently meet the entry requirements, an International Year One (IYO) could be the solution.

For those who don’t meet the entry requirements for direct admission to a UK university, degree preparation courses like an IYO can help them reach the necessary level to start a bachelor’s degree. It’s an excellent option for students who are certain about the subject they want to study.

After successfully completing an IYO, students progress directly to the second year of a bachelor’s degree, saving both time and money. A place at university is guaranteed when the course is passed at the required level, with good attendance.

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - Software Engineering

The course provides a strong foundation in software engineering theory and practice, preparing students to develop professional software systems. It equips them for a wide range of career opportunities, including software engineer, web application programmer, software designer/analyst, or website designer/programmer.

Students will study software development, programming languages, technologies, and applications, including Python, Java, HTML, PHP, UML, database technologies, machine learning, algorithms and data structures, web and mobile computing, and Agile software development. Sharing a common first year with the Computer Science BSc Honours course, which students can transfer into in Year 1, they specialise in software engineering from Year 2.

The Software Engineering BEng emphasises fundamental principles, design, the acquisition of practical skills, and the evaluation of technologies.

The course also offers a short-term work-based learning experience, where students will have the opportunity to work on a real-life problem, typically set by an external organisation as a small-scale project. This experience allows students to apply theory to practice by using their new knowledge and skills in a real-life situation, usually within a business-related context.

Additionally, students will have the opportunity to undertake a year in industry (work placement) after completing the second year of their studies. This helps them gain valuable work experience and enhances their employability. They will receive help and support in finding and securing placement opportunities through workshops and events organised by the Careers and Employability Service and the course team. Typically, students will be assigned roles involving tasks related to software engineering.
