La Trobe University's Bachelor of Laws (Honors) (Graduate Entry) is the perfect place for those who have a Bachelor's degree and want to establish themselves as a forward-thinking legal professional, hone skills and build a rewarding career at the forefront of Australian legal practice.
Students will build talents in advocacy, negotiation and dispute resolution, they will be ready to apply them in both legal and non-legal settings. They will have opportunities to compete against fellow students from La Trobe, other Australian universities, and international universities like Harvard University, University of Cambridge and the University of Hong Kong.
Graduates also have opportunities for real-world placement experiences – working in community legal centers, law firms and government agencies, and building mentor relationships with judges, magistrates and coroners.
Students will learn:
- Dispute resolution: Build key skills in arbitration, conciliation, mediation and negotiation in private and commercial disputes.
- Evidence and criminal procedure: Learn how to apply criminal law to real-world scenarios and provide legal advice.
- Contract law and company law: Learn how to apply the legal principles governing the creation, interpretation and termination of a contract.
- Public law: Discover how government power is distributed, exercised and controlled.
After graduation, students could work in legal practice, international development, environmental protection, government, banking, professional services and more. Possible roles include:
- Barrister or solicitor: Prepare cases, represent clients in court, assist in creating and reviewing contracts, and provide advice on legal issues.
- Policy advisor: Provide trusted advice, identify policy needs, review existing legislation, research and analyze policy options and assess the impacts and feasibility of policies.
- Legal consultant: Provide commercial, technical and timely legal advice to a range of clients, including multinational corporations. Liaise with stakeholders, solve legal problems and conduct research.
- In-house counsel: Combine legal expertise with other interests and work as a dedicated legal practitioner in a business or other organization.
