About Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Computer Networking and Cyber Security (Foundation Year) (GG7M)
London Metropolitan University's four-year Computer Networking and Cyber Security BSc (including foundation year) (Hons) degree provides an alternative route into higher education if students don’t have the necessary qualifications to start an undergraduate degree in computer networking or cyber security.
Students will be taught within the Cyber Security Research Centre, which is a dedicated collaborative facility launched in 2018 to bring London Metropolitan University's industry partners into the University. Students will be exposed to live projects from a variety of industries from within the fintech, cybersecurity and digital forensic businesses.
This course will equip students with the theoretical and practical skills necessary to protect computer systems, physical environments and technologies, as well as find solutions to real security challenges. These skills will help students to succeed in the cyber security industry.
The Computer Networking and Cyber Security BSc degree has been accredited with full CITP status by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. This accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by BCS. As a graduate of this course, accreditation will also entitle students to professional membership of BCS, which is an important part of the criteria for achieving Chartered IT Professional (CITP) status through the Institute. Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.
This course will help students to specialise in the network and application security of modern hardware and software systems. In the foundation year, students will focus on learning the core principles of cybersecurity, robotics and internet of things, mathematics and programming.
The skills students gain with this foundation year will fully prepare them for the practical and theoretical study in the following three years of the course.
The foundation year of this course is shared with a number of other cyber security-related degrees, so in Year 0, students will have classmates who are interested in a variety of different specialisms.
This four-year degree is designed around the Cisco curriculum, so students will study a complete set of CCNA modules to gain additional Cisco certification training throughout the course.
The tutors have strong links with the industry as well as potential employers within cyber security. The dedicated teaching staff will be there to support students throughout the course. Students will gain confidence in their academic abilities and be pushed to succeed as they progress through the course, graduating with the technical skills needed to protect online data from attacks and unauthorised access.
Following the foundation year, students will study the same course content and modules as those who study the Computer Networking and Cyber Security BSc (Hons) degree.
Should students decide during the foundation year that they would like to specialise in a different area of study, there is some flexibility to allow them to do this.
Students will graduate with a full undergraduate degree with the same title and award as those who study the traditional three-year degree.
An International Bright Futures Scholarship in the amount of £3,000 will automatically be applied to eligible students with overseas fee status starting a degree with London Met in the 2024/25 academic year. This scholarship includes a tuition fee reduction for the duration of students' studies and is applicable to both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
Tuition Deposit is £4,000 for all students excluding those from Punjab and Haryana for whom the deposit amount will remain at 50%
