English is an inherently plural discipline: the creative writing element of this allows students to focus on creating their own texts, as much as studying the work of other writers.
Loughborough University's English with Creative Writing Bachelor of Arts (Honours) program offers great flexibility through its mixture of optional and compulsory modules in creative writing, literary history and the study of language, allowing students to tailor the course to suit their interests. Just as the department's academic staff are recognized for their expertise in areas such as contemporary poetry and theory, playwriting, culture and communication, and literature, students' creative writing lecturers are practitioners in poetry, fiction and life-writing. Their knowledge of these subject areas and enthusiasm for their research and teaching make this a vibrant and supportive place for students to study, a place where they can learn the many different skills they will need, including transferable skills for their future employment.
The curriculum for the program offers students the freedom to tailor the course to their interests - covering creative writing, literature and language within a broad range of fields and approaches, providing a stimulating environment for their degree work. Students will have the opportunity to study all of the major genres of creative writing (poetry and prose), and will be encouraged to reflect analytically and critically on their developing practice as writers. They will also be required to undertake a major piece of creative writing as part of their dissertation in their third year.
