2-Semester Pathway - Pre-Master's Programme - Continue to Master of Science - Sport Biomechanics

The Level 6 Pre-Master’s Programme (PMP) is a two-semester programme, with guaranteed progression to a wide range of Master’s degrees at Loughborough University.

This Pre-Master’s Programme (PMP) is designed to prepare international students for postgraduate study in the United Kingdom. The PMP will allow them to improve their English while learning the study skills and research methods that they will need during their Master's degree studies. They will study academic modules relating to their chosen progression route. Each semester consists of thirteen teaching weeks, one reading week, and an assessment week. The weekly hours of study varies by semester with them on average studying around 18-21 (and up to 21) hours per week. Each module will have an assessment schedule, which will be completed by the end of the appropriate semester. Assessments will be designed to demonstrate learning across the individual modules of the programme and to allow them to experience a wide range of the assessment methods used in United Kingdom postgraduate programmes. Assessments will include coursework, essays, reports and other structured assignments, oral examination and unseen written examinations.

Through the measurement and simulation of movement, the Master of Science - Sport Biomechanics course facilitates a greater understanding of human performance in sporting and recreational activities. This understanding can then be used to improve performance and reduce injury risk. The programme contains cutting-edge content, ranging from experimental data collection, analysis techniques and equipment, through to the latest theoretical considerations and research problems. Throughout the programme students will benefit from access to a large designated teaching laboratory and use key pieces of biomechanics equipment, including Vicon motion analysis systems, force plates, wireless electromyography (EMG), and isokinetic dynamometers. Additionally, they will use the programming language MATLAB for data processing and analysis, as well as software for computer simulation and inertia modelling.
