The focus is on fostering a love for the arts, collaboration, and the creation of new works. The community actively engages with its surroundings, enhancing the collective ability to communicate with passion and purpose.
The Music Education Program at the LSU School of Music is highly respected nationwide. With a strong foundation in excellence, the program brings together a distinguished faculty of music education experts, talented performing musicians and conductors, knowledgeable music theorists and historians, a solid liberal arts component, and a consistently high-caliber group of undergraduate and graduate students.
Known for its comprehensive, hands-on curriculum, the music education program boasts a track record of success among its graduates and the research proficiency of its faculty. This expertise meets the practical needs of both pre-service and in-service teachers, while also advancing the culture of music education. The program prides itself on the synergy between research and practice, providing a solid basis for the decision-making process inherent in music teaching.
The Bachelor of Music Education program offers two concentrations:
Vocal
Instrumental
These concentrations prepare students to excel as teachers in elementary and secondary schools. The program emphasizes that quality music teaching stems from strong musicianship, which is why students are expected to have achieved notable success as music performers in high school. At LSU, they continue to refine their musical skills through individual mentoring with a master performer and participation in major performing ensembles.
Courses in music theory, music history, conducting, jazz, piano, and technology complement the students’ musical development, creating a foundation that integrates with professional education coursework in teaching and psychology. Through partnerships with urban and suburban schools in the Baton Rouge area, students gain diverse experiences that offer insight and help guide their career decisions.
