Petroleum engineers are responsible for overseeing drilling and petroleum-producing operations. They work to improve drilling operations, including those in challenging environments such as arctic, jungle, and deep ocean drilling. Petroleum engineers analyze geologic and engineering data to predict oil and gas recovery, production rates, and overall production. They can advance to various positions within the industry, such as field, district, area, staff, or chief petroleum engineering roles, or pursue management positions like supervisor, superintendent, manager, and president. Some may choose to become consultants or start their own ventures in the oil business.

Louisiana State University (LSU) has maintained a strong department of petroleum engineering for over half a century to meet the needs of the state’s oil and gas industry.
