About Bachelor of Science - Biochemistry
Manhattanville College’s Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Biochemistry degree programs explore the chemical processes that guide the most basic steps of life, from conception to death. As a biochemistry major, students will study the complex interaction between fields of genetics, microbiology, physiology, immunology, and chemistry, getting the chance to work closely with faculty members on research projects — and complete their own. If they're interested in careers or graduate studies in chemistry and biology or want to pursue a career in medicine, studying biochemistry at Manhattanville develops the foundational knowledge students need through developing a background in hands-on application.
Within the biochemistry major, students can pursue a Bachelor of Science degree or a Bachelor of Arts degree. In both the B.S. and the B.A. program, students can personalize their choice of classes to study a particular field while learning essential topics in biology and chemistry.
Whether students are interested in animal biochemistry, immunology, genetics, plant biochemistry, or cellular or molecular biology, they’ll apply core knowledge in laboratory settings and through directed research projects. In a career-focused capstone course, all biochemistry majors dive into practicing research methods and preparing for academic and professional careers.
A supportive faculty, small class sizes, and opportunities to join robust research initiatives allow Manhattanville students to grow the relationships and build experiences that ensure success in their future careers.
Graduates of Manhattanville’s biochemistry degree programs can work in commercial or educational laboratories and for pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies in roles like chemist or technician. Students will gain the communication skills to go into science writing or consulting and explore many other career choices.
Earning a bachelor’s in biochemistry is also ideal for students interested in graduate school in biological, chemical, and medical fields, from general medicine, genetics, microbiology, physiology, and immunology to toxicology and pharmacology.
Through the B.A. and B.S. in Biochemistry programs, students gain the ability to:
- Exhibit quantitative reasoning and analysis abilities and problem-solving skills by choosing appropriate techniques or procedures for a given problem.
- Demonstrate mastery of scientific writing skills by preparing laboratory reports and research papers that follow the guidelines of scientific literature.
- Demonstrate interdisciplinary knowledge by completing course requirements and electives in Biology and Chemistry.
While building the necessary applied skills and a breadth of knowledge in biological and chemical fields, biochemistry students will foster professional relationships with peers and faculty in preparation for educational and career opportunities post-graduation.
