About Dual Degree - Bachelor of Arts - Sociology & Bachelor of Education - Primary/Junior (PE)

Students will first complete their Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. Once complete they will move into the two years of their Bachelor of Education.

This program is perfect for anyone who is fascinated by human behavior, wants to know what makes a person act or react in a certain manner, or is interested in learning how behavior is influenced by social status, race, religion, and gender. Sociology is a compelling and broad discipline.

Students will examine the structure of social institutions like family, class, community, government, and legal systems, and will analyze issues that range from individual matters like gender identity, aging, and religion to societal issues like war and peace, social inequality, and economic development. Studying these topics will help them develop keen observation and analytical skills and will enhance their understanding of the impact of social structures on individual life chances.

Nipissing University's Sociology program is offered through the Sociology and Anthropology department which emphasizes applied research. That means that students gain theoretical knowledge, and also have plenty of opportunities for hands-on research and experiential learning. Nipissing University is situated in an area of strong First Nations activity and influence and many of the faculty have research relationships with First Nations communities. The Statistics Canada Research Data Centre provides access to detailed data of Canadian surveys and censuses for research, promotes the use of data through associated training, and assists in the dissemination of research results.

After completing their Bachelor of Arts, students will begin Nipissing University's Bachelor of Education (BEd) program, which was one of the first pre-service teacher education programs to be fully accredited by the Ontario College of Teachers.

The Bachelor of Education (BEd) program is part of the university's Schulich School of Education and meets the requirements of the Ontario College of Teachers for teacher certification (Certificate of Qualification). The program provided by the Schulich School of Education is rigorous and demands a high degree of commitment. To be successful, a student must display sensitivity to pupils, a sense of responsibility to the teaching profession, and a respect for knowledge.

Candidates may apply to enroll in one of three divisions in the program:
  • P/J -- Primary/Junior (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6)
  • J/I -- Junior/Intermediate (Grades 4 to 10)
  • I/S -- Intermediate/Senior (Grades 7 to 12)
Upon successful completion of the two-year professional program, students will receive a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree.
