About Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Classical Studies (QA)

Classics at Queen’s is a great fit for anyone interested in battles, myths, astrology, riddles and magic, languages and literature, graphic novels, avatars and cosplay, building models and theatre sets, digging in the dirt, or exploring underwater.

Classics refers to the study of the Greek and Roman worlds. Multi-disciplinary in approach, it involves the studies of history, literature, archaeology, religion, mythology, drama and philosophy, in addition to the ancient languages of Greek and Latin. Today understanding of Greek and Roman culture is further enhanced by the latest advances in technology that increasingly pervade studies in archaeology, epigraphy, papyrology, and ancient science and medicine. At Queen’s, students have the opportunity to get hands-on experience in the latest techniques by participating in archaeological excavations and projects overseas supervised by Queen's faculty.

Students also learn through a variety of on-campus projects and assignments such as working with the Diniacopoulos collection of artifacts at Queen's. The chance to share in the tradition of over 175 continuous years of instruction in Greek and Latin at Queen's creates an excellent opportunity for students to deepen their love and knowledge of the ancient world in a small class setting, all supported by knowledgeable and congenial faculty and staff.

Queen's holds that the study of Classics leads to a wider appreciation of human values and achievements, and a more objective understanding of ourselves and time.

Major in Classical Studies

A major is an intensive program of study in one discipline, with approximately half of the courses taken within the discipline, with room for an optional minor in any other Arts and Science discipline.

Note: Students in this program are also eligible for the Queen’s Undergraduate Internship Program (QUIP) which provides 2nd or 3rd year students with a 12-16 month work experience. The internship normally occurs following the student’s third year of study, after which the student completes the final year of the honors degree. The internships are paid, professionally supervised, career-related positions offering students the opportunity to learn about current advances, practices, and technologies in business and industry.
