About Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Hispanic Studies - Second Degree Honours Candidates (QAY)

This degree is for those students who are currently completing/ have completed a first undergraduate degree and are interested in beginning a second undergraduate degree at Queen’s.

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures is a multidisciplinary unit that offers students the opportunity to learn languages, develop an understanding of literary and cultural traditions, and pursue studies in the field of Linguistics. A degree focusing on languages, literatures and cultures, or Linguistics provides students with valuable transferable skills that are increasingly important in the global world.

Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers a major, medial and minor Plan in Hispanic Studies (formerly Spanish Language and Literature)

Depending on the student's Plan, they will expand their Spanish language skills and/or gain knowledge about critical literary and cultural concepts of the Spanish speaking world.

Taking a major, medial or minor will give students the opportunity to go abroad to a Spanish speaking country and immerse themselves in the language and culture. A few scholarships are available in the Department (one for Spain, and one for Latin America) to help students with the financial side of the exchange.

Knowledge of Spanish is increasingly important in today’s world. There are over 350 million Spanish native speakers and with these language skills graduates will: have greater opportunities in the job market, be able to communicate with co-workers and customers, understand signage and documents, and especially if traveling abroad - order food with confidence at Mexican or Latino restaurants and know exactly what it is!

Note: Students in this program are eligible for the Queen’s Undergraduate Internship Program (QUIP) which provides 2nd or 3rd year students with a 12-16 month work experience. The internship normally occurs following the student’s third year of study, after which the student completes the final year of the honours degree. The internships are paid, professionally supervised, career-related positions offering students the opportunity to learn about current advances, practices, and technologies in business and industry.
