About Undergraduate GSSP - Computer Science (3-Semester Mixed Pathway) Transfer to Bachelor of Science - Computer Science at Queens College of The City University of New York

Program Description

Global Student Success Program (GSSP)

Queens College Global Student Success Program (GSSP) is a required first-year experience program designed by academic experts covering all aspects of a student's new living and learning environment in the United States.

As a Queens College student, from day one, students will enjoy the added benefits of smaller classes where they will receive more personalized attention, and access to academic advisors and tutoring as well as opportunities to connect with other international and American students through a variety of social activities, student clubs and organizations.

Computer Science encompasses the theory of computation, algorithms and data structures, programming methodology and languages, and computer elements and architecture. Programming is only the best-known skill in a discipline that has numerous specializations. Computer scientists design and build systems and applications for use in every field of science and technology, in the arts and media, in government and administration—in short, throughout modern society.

Computer scientists also are shaping the industries of tomorrow through areas like bioinformatics. Most computer science is pursued in teams that address technical goals from many standpoints; these range from the local, face-to-face workgroups to networked, globally distributed projects composed of people from different nations.

A degree in computer science is a launching pad for technology-related professions as well as graduate study. The Queens College computer science department frequently coordinates career opportunities for its majors with industry and government agencies.

With technology becoming increasingly integrated into every aspect of society, a background in computer science is more in demand than ever. If students have strengths in the areas of technology and problem solving, a computer science major may be the right fit.

Additionally, in collaboration with the accounting and economics departments, the computer science department has created a minor in financial modelling designed to provide students majoring in computer science or finance with the necessary interdisciplinary skills for a career in the financial services industry.

Faculty research interests include but are not limited to:

  • Analytic number theory
  • Cryptography
  • Computer vision
  • Operating systems
  • Computational algebra
  • Computer organization and architecture
  • Computer graphics
  • Programming languages
One of the research labs available to students is the Uncertainty Reasoning Laboratory (URL Lab). Its investigations center on developing tools and methods for reasoning, learning and decision making under uncertainty and bring researchers together from multiple disciplines such as computational biology and big data analytics.
