Program Description
In Sheridan College Bachelor of Applied Health Sciences - Athletic Therapy program was designed to provide students with the skills they need to become a certified athletic therapist.
Throughout this program, students will gain:
- Advanced athletic therapy skills such as field assessment and injury treatment, clinical assessment and rehabilitation.
- Entrepreneurial business skills to help students establish a practice.
- Research skills to ensure students always stay current in the field.
Graduates of this program will have demonstrated the ability to:
- Develop a comprehensive athletic injury/illness prevention program for the active individual.
- Assess the nature of injuries and illnesses commonly sustained by active individuals using relevant theory and practices while in compliance with current standards and established policies.
- Determine appropriate treatment for injured active individuals, based on findings from the assessment.
- Provide appropriate first aid and emergency care for acute musculoskeletal injuries or illnesses in compliance with current professional standards and established policies and procedures.
- Create comprehensive rehabilitation and reconditioning programs for injuries or physical limitations sustained by the active population to ensure a full return to productivity and an active lifestyle.
- Oversee administrative components of an athletic therapy practice.
- Recommend health care information, education and counselling to active individuals, parents and coaches on matters pertaining to the physical, psychological, and emotional health and well being of the individual.
- Communicate effectively verbally, nonverbally, and in written form in a variety of organizational settings.
- Interact as an integral part of the sports medicine team in the management of the injured active population.
- Conduct professional practice that is in compliance with the CATA Code of Ethics and Scope of Practice in a legal and ethical manner.
- Integrate the principles of research including the collection and analysis of information to form reasoned conclusions.
- Describe the normal physiological functions of the human body.
- Examine key structures of the human biological systems.
