TAFE NSW's Certificate IV in Interior Decoration gives students the skills and knowledge they need to work as an assistant interior decorator or interior designer for retail, consulting and building businesses.
In this course, students will explore the world of interior decoration and learn a broad range of specialised and technical decorating skills. Students will also develop their capacity for planning, designing and arranging space, interior styling, specifying finishes and furnishings, colour selection, and purchasing. When studying with TAFE NSW, students learn by doing, and gain the practical real-world skills the interior design and decoration industry is looking for.
TAFE NSW's Diploma of Interior Design equips students with the skills they need to unleash their creative talents and create captivating interior design solutions. Graduate with the design knowledge and business sense needed to succeed in the industry and develop transferable skills that is used in global design contexts. In this exciting course, students will learn how to establish, negotiate and refine a design brief, design lighting for residential interiors, produce digital models and documentation for projects and design colour schemes for interior and exterior spaces. Students will also learn to evaluate site structures and services, and apply creative design methods with supporting product documentation.
TAFE NSW's Bachelor of Interior Design is a career-orientated higher education program that combines both the practical and theory-based aspects of design. This degree has been developed by experts with extensive interior design experience. It emphasizes design in the real world. This three-year professional degree will prepare graduates for employment in the interior design industry in Australia and overseas.
This degree is delivered at the Design Centre Enmore, one of the best design schools in Australia. TAFE NSW's students and graduates regularly win national and international prizes and are employed at some of Australia's most successful design companies. Students will learn and apply the skills and knowledge required to function as an effective creative design practitioner.
Students will learn how to:
- Generate innovative and original interior design concepts
- Identify and explore the spatial, structural and material elements of interior environments
- Develop an understanding of the interaction between people and spaces
- Develop strong project management and business development skills
- Produce creative contemporary designs taking into account historical, socioeconomic, political, and environmental influences
- Solve problems creatively, be imaginative, think laterally
- Apply colour to interiors, select furniture, choose fixtures
- Use 3D graphic software to communicate visually
- Use effective leadership skills to manage others
- Allocate work and provide support and constructive feedback
- Develop business planning and financial management skills
Work Placement Requirements: Students are required to complete a total of 70 work placement hours as part of this degree. Students will work with the host employer to determine work placement hours which could be a period of 7 hours per day over 10 days or a block of 2 weeks or one day per week over 10 weeks.
It is recommended that students identify host employers to undertake their work placement. However, TAFE NSW's experienced teachers can also assist students in finding this placement to complete these hours successfully. During the final year of study, students will undertake an internship in a professional interior design practice. This internship will account for a single subject in assessment and is a compulsory subject.
In certain agreed circumstances, where students are already working in the industry, or a suitable internship cannot be found, one (previously unselected) elective may be chosen from DSEL201A Design for sustainability, DSEL202A Total experience design, and IDEL203A Lighting interior environments, as an alternative.
This degree has been developed to ensure students develop technical familiarity with all aspects of interior design. There are also 10 core subjects that are fundamental to all aspects of creative design. Students will also be able to select electives from other design disciplines.
