About Bachelor of Arts - English - Literature (Optional Co-op)

English is a broad major that allows students to focus on a number of areas of study such as literature, linguistics, and both creative writing and practical writing. Attention is given to gender and culture issues in literature and language courses. Students develop the ability to communicate and a sense of humanity that is increasingly recognized as a valuable tool in the workplace. The literature curriculum develops strong critical and textual skills, and allows students to discover great literary works of the past and present, providing an excellent foundation for graduate study in English and related fields.

The Literature concentration empowers English majors to engage critically with the many texts that compose the world. This concentration will train students to analyze various genres, think critically about their implications, and communicate effectively in speech and writing. Choosing this concentration enables students to build their knowledge of historical traditions in British, American, and world literatures in English, as well as the functions and historical development of the English language. Through this investigation, candidates will develop skills in research, argumentative writing, and literary analysis, building a foundation for graduate study or employment in areas that require critical thinking and communication skills, all while exploring how language expresses diverse cultural experiences necessary for active participation in an increasingly diverse society.
