The computer science department offers two distinct undergraduate degree programs: computer science and computer information systems. Both programs lead to a Bachelor of Science, and both share a core program of study in the fundamentals of software design and development. The programs differ in the mathematics and natural sciences requirements, with the computer information systems program having fewer requirements in both of these areas. This allows the computer information systems major to include an approved minor in their program of study, providing the opportunity to focus study on a particular area of application.
In the computer information systems program, students can combine their interest in computers with a specific application. Computer information systems majors learn about systems analysis and design, computer communications and applications to business and commercial data management. Numerous course electives round out the curriculum, allowing students to tailor the program based on their interests — and meet their individual career goals.
It includes at least one course exploring the social and ethical implications of computing in a modern, digital world. Also included are a variety of courses in the humanities, the arts, and the social and natural sciences. These, combined with the computer science requirements, provide students with the broad-based education necessary for success in a diverse, global workplace.
