About Master of Laws - International Criminal Law

The LLM in International Criminal Law is an innovative, flexible program that provides students with in-depth knowledge of international criminal law in practice. Participants will explore issues such as crimes against humanity, aggression, grounds for excluding liability, the International Criminal Court, and the relationship between international criminal law and international human rights. In addition to examining specific areas of crime, students will critically analyze key trials, such as the Nuremberg Trials, and their impact on the creation of the criminal offenses of genocide and war crimes. Other key focuses will include the Tribunals in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, as well as the responsibility to protect and prosecute.

When studying the LLM in International Criminal Law, students will:

  • Research and critically evaluate the key theories, concepts, and principles of healthcare regulations as applied in the UK.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of international criminal institutions in practice and offer suggestions for reform.
  • Gain an understanding of how the prosecution of international crimes furthers international human rights.
  • Be taught by expert lecturers, including subject matter specialists, former and current practitioners, and research and teaching-focused academics.
  • Benefit from strategic partnerships with firms, regulators, and accreditation bodies, which inform program development.
  • Improve employability by gaining important transferable skills and mapping their careers with the careers team.
  • Strengthen their network by connecting with other students, faculty, and industry professionals on an international scale, while seeking out opportunities for future placements and job opportunities.
  • Increase earning potential, as the 2023 Graduate Labour Market Statistics found that postgraduates, on average, earn £5,000 more than their graduate counterparts.
  • Enjoy flexibility, as the program offers a wide range of study modes (full-time, part-time, on campus, online) to provide students with the choice and flexibility needed to succeed in their studies.
  • Get ahead of the competition by gaining in-depth knowledge of their topic of interest and becoming subject experts, which will provide a competitive edge in the job market. According to the 2021/22 Graduate Outcomes data, 94% of postgraduates were in employment or further study 15 months after graduating (contains HESA Data: Copyright Jisc 2024).
  • Prepare for the future of legal technology by studying modules in legal technology and gaining insights into this emerging area of law.
