The award-winning, nationally recognized BS in Environmental Science program is grounded in the natural sciences integrating biology, chemistry, physics, and geology with the social sciences to prepare the next generation of innovators and knowledge creators. Students gain essential skills in ecology, geology, hydrology, and marine science and apply these skills to critical challenges facing coastal marine systems in the Boston metropolitan area. Through coursework, a senior capstone course, internships, research, and cooperative education programs, students apply their knowledge to real-world problems in collaboration with our many public and private partners. Majors can focus their studies on the earth systems (Earth and Hydrologic Science Track), coastal oceans (Marine Science Track), or on the science-policy interface (Policy and Management Track).
After completing the requirements in the BS in environmental sciences, students will have deep and practical knowledge of earth and marine systems science. They will have the quantitative skills needed to advance discovery and create new knowledge, will know how to visualize and communicate complex data, and will have the hands-on experiences to support stewardship and sustainable management of natural resources.
BS Environmental Science alumni leverage their deep understanding of the interactions between and within earth systems to advance discovery about the world’s land and ocean ecosystems, conserve and protect our natural resources, and innovate new technologies to ensure the sustainability of this blue planet. Alumni are employed by government agencies as field and lab scientists, in private businesses as lab and field researchers, and in nonprofits as researchers, data analysts, and environmental educators. Alumni are also well positioned for advanced degrees in the environmental and marine sciences.
