About Bachelor of Laws (Honours) - Law (with Foundation Year)

On this course, students will have the opportunity to act like a lawyer from the start, gaining the key legal skills required in the ‘law in practice’ environment.

This course is offered as a degree with foundation year - a four-year programme which provides an additional foundation year at the beginning of the degree, that will give students academic and practical experience, as well as the skills they need to ensure they are equipped to successfully complete their chosen degree.

During the foundation year:

  • Students will take modules in English and Maths which will develop their core academic and study skills.
  • The syllabus includes a year-long module relevant to their chosen degree subject. This will provide students with a subject-specific knowledge in Social Sciences which is essential for success in their degree.

The best preparation for the legal profession is to think like a lawyer from day one. The practice-based approach means students will learn to understand the law in the context of everyday life and legal practice, and apply their learning in a number of ways.

This law degree has been designed by experienced academics and practitioners, with input from the University of Roehampton's internationally-renowned Crucible Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice. It is designed specifically to focus on their career development.

Throughout this degree, students will work with practitioners from the legal sector. Students will gain the practical experience of putting law into action through the University of Roehampton's pro bono activities at the Law Clinic and the Citizens' Advice Bureau and have the opportunity to go on work placements.

From the start, students will be encouraged to engage with legal issues and reflect on what they learn as an integral part of their experience. A high proportion of their time will be spent working face to face with tutors and developing their understanding of legal issues, particularly the core skills and competencies legal practitioners are expected to have.

Students will develop an understanding of the different areas of law-making and legal practice by visiting the historic courts of central London. This year, students have observed cases in the Supreme Court, visited other courts and tribunals as part of the Law in Practice module, and are also visiting the Houses of Parliament.

Modules currently available include Legal Systems, Ethics and Skills, which covers the structure and function of the English legal system; Public Law and Human Rights, which explores civil liberties and human rights; and the Law in Practice modules in year one, focusing on legal communication, and in year two, on business and commercial awareness.

The University of Roehampton's dedicated Law Careers Advisor has established links with graduate recruiters and can give students ideas and tips to help them gain a good graduate job. Together, students will map out their aptitudes and create a career plan. The University of Roehampton also provides personalised sessions in CV and application writing, presentations, mock interviews and commercial-awareness training, as well as giving students opportunities to develop their networking skills.

This Law degree is ranked 1st in the UK for student satisfaction (Complete University Guide 2022).
