About Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Adult Nursing
On this course, students will be part of the next generation of community and primary care nurses and learn to support people to live healthy lives.
At the University of Roehampton, students will be part of a unique and exciting course and learn to make a difference to people’s lives and deliver outstanding care throughout their career as an Adult Nurse.
This course focuses on primary care and community nursing, giving students the skills to provide exceptional care in a range of settings to support the needs of people in the community.
Students will learn in brand new teaching facilities from expert clinical and academic staff and in a wide range of clinical placements. Students will receive excellent support to ensure they achieve both academic and professional success.
On successful completion of the course, students will be eligible to apply for registration as an Adult Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
The learning on the programme will be split between theory in the classroom and clinical practice in a range of placements and in the Clinical Simulation Centre (CSC).
Students will develop theoretical knowledge through lectures, seminars, group work, guided independent study, online learning, reflective practice and a variety of assignments. Students will be taught by expert staff and learn alongside nursing students and students from other health and care professions.
Students will gain practical skills and experience through a range of clinical placements, such as community nursing (district nurses), primary care (general practice nurses), public health nursing (health visitors), care homes, hospices, rehabilitation centres and acute hospitals. Students will be supported, supervised and assessed during placements by both clinical and academic staff.
Students will also spend a significant amount of time learning in the new Clinical Simulation Centre (CSC). These brand-new facilities include realistic community and in-hospital settings. Here, students will safely practise clinical skills with other students, service users, carers, role players and hi-tech patient simulators under the guidance of experienced clinical and academic staff.
Students will also have the opportunity to organise an elective placement in the UK or abroad.
During the three years, students will demonstrate achievement of the NMC Standards of proficiency for registered nurses.
Students will also develop the values and behaviours that underpin the NHS Constitution, such as putting service users at the centre of their care and treating people with compassion, respect and dignity.
Students will learn about nursing as a profession and its central role within 21st century health and care services. Students will also learn about the shift towards integrated care in the community as part of the NHS Long Term Plan.
Students will learn about the importance of developing professional relationships with the people they are caring for and working with. Clinical practice will help students develop confidence in communicating with a diverse range of people. Students will also develop resilience through reflective practice.
Students will gain an in-depth understanding of how the human body works, how to help people stay healthy and how to treat and support people with long-term and acute illnesses. Students will develop a holistic approach to assessing and supporting both physical and mental wellbeing.
As students progress through the course, they will develop higher level skills to lead, manage and develop themselves and other people within the health and care team. Students will also learn about the evidence base for clinical practice and how this is used to enhance the safety and quality of patient care.
